When Corporate America Gets It Right: Nike Just Does It

What is the one thing that many of us complain about besides the government? Many times it is the fact that big corporations just don't give back to the communities they sell their products to. I know I have done that many times. In the case of Matthew Newman, our injured friend from Washington State, Nike got it right. Really right!

Now any big organization is made up of hundreds and thousands of individuals. That certainly applies to the Government and Corporations too. Sometimes individual actions within those massive bureaucracies allow the organizations heart and underlying principles to shine through.

When Nike Trainer and football coach Matt James saw the Raise 7 for Matthew Videos he was moved to action. He shared the story of the critically injured Quarterback from Highland High School in Cowiche, Washington with some co-workers. The videos tell it all. Matthew doing what he loved went down on the field of battle.

His injury was the almost always fatal Second Impact Syndrome; a second concussion on top of a concussion suffered at a previous practice that went undetected. The second blow causes the blood flow to the head to flow at an uncontrollable pace. The result is critical injury and surgery that is dramatic and life threatening.

Enter top Nike designers Aaron Cooper and Brian Mitchell. After seeing Matthew's story the decided to do something that has rarely been done. They made him his own shoes! Taking Matthew's story, his team colors and logos, his love for Washington State, and a Raise 7 Image posted to his Facebook Site they created a story Board. A few days later they produced a demo of the shoe we call "The Seven".

After many many weeks of waiting for the shoe to be produced we were able to deliver Matthew the demo shoe when we visited him recently in Yakima. The picture album shows the reaction which was incredible! These three guys could have done almost anything but this. It would have been easier to send some other products (which Matt did also) but realizing his plight they did the one thing that any 17 year old trying to come back from the edge would love. Made him his very own shoe.
We call them "The Seven". 8 pairs were made. They are not for sale so don't ask.

And so as Matthew had a new Titanium skull plate placed into his head this past weekend there he was. In recovery he insisted on wearing his shoes. The shoes that one of the worlds largest corporations through these special employees had made possible. The shoes that allowed us to see inside the beating heart of a corporation that has been oft criticized but rarely complimented by some.

Matthew asked that we delivered this message to Nike. To Matt, Aaron, and Brian. To Nike. To you all "Thank you... you will never know what this means to me".

These are tough times. You think you have it bad? Well count your blessings. It is unlikely you have endured 30 weeks of surgery, therapy, and pain. It is unlikely your life itself has been changed forever. To you and to all of us... Matthew sends this one simple message.

Raise 7 For Matthew Update: 2010 Making Progress and Getting His Own Shoe

Hello Everyone... It has been a while since our last post. We have all been very busy. Some of us involved with Matthew have moved on yet others stay actively involved in the effort to help him get better. Still yet many of us have moved on to work in this area of concussion management and prevention.

Some updates for Matthew.

In March Matthew was able to stay busy with physical therapy a few days a week, visits with doctors and his medical staff, and schooling mostly in his home.
On March 16th Matthew and Dirk; along with Matthew's dad Randy and his little brother Benjamin... and Young Kole Knudsen... were able to meet and attend the WSN ALl Area Hoop Jam in Richland, Washington. Matthew and Dirk were celebrity judges at the event. During that event we saw some great girls and boys basketball as well as some kids that Matthew has known through sports all around Eastern Washington. He was as surprised to see them as they were to see him. It was a fun trip to just talk and spend some quality time together. He did a great job of breaking down the dunks!! Next Up was one of the biggest surprised of all. Matthew's story reached Nike through a friend of Dirk's. Nike Master Speed and Agility Trainer Matt James showed some of the Raise 7 For Matthew videos to some guys at work. The designers of Kobe Bryant's and LeBron James Shoes saw his videos we made and were so moved that designed and made him his own shoes and they had 10 pairs made. They are known as the "7" and have all the elements that are a part of Matthew's story. The Highland Scottie Plaid is right there inside the shoe. Inside the shoe is a "Matthew Newman" liner with a silhouette of him throwing the ball. The Scottie Logo is stitched into the tongue as are two Black "Raise 7" logos...the whole shoe is done in Scottie colors with a splash of WSU Cougars in there. To see Matthew's face when we gave him these shoes was pure Magic. He is one of the only people to ever get his own shoe by the worlds largest sports company.

"These shoes are Amazing... they are sick. How lucky am I to get something like this. I just want to thank everyone that helped me. Dirk tell Nike I love them and will wear them with pride. Oh may gosh this is really great," said a tearful Matthew.

To end March Matthew went to school for about 4 hours one day. He is getting plenty of help...and he is doing well. Many things he is having to relearn so it will take some time. Matthew really enjoyed seeing his friends and being with them all again. He will likely continue to return to Highland High one day a week until school is out.
Looking ahead Matthew is now part of the story of Andrew "Drew" Swank of Spokane, Washington. Drew was hurt the same night Matthew was... returned to play the next week and was hit again. Drew did not make it. There were many connections between the boys... little did we know. Both boys suffered Second Impact Syndrome. Now through the connection of the two boys through their injuries and so much more we are so very proud to announce that The Swanks and Newman's are supporting Join Drew's Team and the new effort to Raise Awareness of how to prevent Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries. This is called "Team 7:15" and it is going to save lives and change this football culture of ours. Matthew and Drew will be honored through this program.

Raise 7 For Haiti Event a Huge Success. Come inside and see!

You would have had to have been there to really appreciate what happened. But on February 6th, 2010 we went to Cowiche to spend a couple of days with the Newman's and the folks of Highland High School. What we found was nothing short of amazing!

There is the Apple Orchards of Central Washington we reconnected with Matthew Newman. His family was most gracious and we enjoyed about 24 hours of fun together. The idea was to head out to the basketball games at Highland High School and enjoy the games together.

We brought up a new load of Raise 7 For Matthew T-Shirts and Matthew wanted to donate most of the proceeds to the people of Haiti. That we did through Medical Team International and we raised over $2000 dollars together.

The event featured the JV, Girls and Boys Games at Highland. His family and supporters had made a Huge Cake and we came into a packed gym. Matthew was on Cloud 9 as his team mates joined him and the party was on.

There were hugs and high fives all around and that went on all night. People from opposing Mabton as well as people from all over Highland and the Naches Valley were in attendance. It appeared that about 700 people were at the games. It was a great environment.

The Administration did a great job. The facility was very nice and the traditions of excellence and Scottie pride were there for all to see.

The girls game ended and Dirk Knudsen was announced as a special guest.

At center court Dirk introduced himself and with the help of his 10 year old son Kole talked about Matthew Newman and his amazing comeback. Then with emotional Matthew and crowd watching he awarded Matthew with the WashingtonPreps.com Athlete of the Year Award. Matthew accepted and was clearly moved to tears. It was awesome.

That was followed by three special gifts from Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger. Those were a mini Helmet, a special Picture, and a signed DVD all with a custom message for Matthew from Rudy himself.

Next up was a letter that was sent to Matthew by NFL Great QB Kurt Warner. That was read out loud by Dirk and really was heart felt and most amazing too.

Then we had a Huge Cake, watched and enjoyed the games together, and shared in a Massive Group Raise Seven from the group itself. Over 500 hundred Raise 7 supporters joined in the pictures on the Highland Scottie Floor.

The nights emotional and inspirational events included hugs and support from every Mabton and Highland Player as well as all the Coaches too. It was really just very cool.

Three Raise 7 Shirts were signed. One for Matthew himself, one for Max Conradt of Oregon which Max's Law is named after, and one for the family of Drew Swank of Valley Christian who passed away from an on field concussion this year. That was a very emotional tribute and Dirk talked about Drew and his family during the Award ceremony.

The night of fun was followed by a big breakfast, a walk on the farm, and the Super Bowl. Matthew and Dirk were cheering for the Saints and with the Saints down 17-16 they did a Saints Raise 7 and well.... the rest is History as they say. See the unbelievable pictures below. The event could not have gone any better.

Matthew continues to work hard on his therapy. He has gained a little weight. He is trying to re-learn some of the essential things that he needs to get better and return to his life. Matthew is on track but every person with a Traumatic Brain injury needs to heal in their own way and on their own time. He is doing just that.

"This event was amazing! I mean it was very emotional for all of us. We had a great time and just sort of enjoyed all energy and these great people and the community," said Knudsen. "One of the greatest things I have ever been a part of."

"What is not obvious to people seeing him is that he is not the same kid he was. Don't get me wrong. He is fantastic and a real joy. But he is struggling in many ways and will need to work hard and we all hope he gets back to where he was. Brain injuries of the magnitude that he had are very difficult to make a full recovery from but Matthew is proving he is a survivor and up to the challenge," he added thoughtfully.

120 Days After Critical Injury Matthew Newman Makes Triumphant Appearance

It was September 18th, 2009. Football season was in its third week in Cowiche, Washington and around the country too. That night was like any other Friday Night. Fans were lining the track and in the stands. The smell of burgers and dogs drifted across the field and the sound of cheering was in the air. Washington High School football was back as the Highland Scotties battled the Naches Valley Rangers.

Leading the battle and the Scotties was #7 QB Matthew Newman. The game was highly competitive. A great game for sure. In fact the game went into overtime but as Matthew tried to manufacture a win for his team something went wrong. Somewhere and somehow he received a very traumatic hit. As the effects of that blow began to take their near deadly toll upon him he began to loose consciousness and control. Things went from bad to worse.

A silence went out across the stadium. It was not long before it was clear that Matthew was in some real trouble. He left later in an ambulance. That night in Yakima at the hospital Newman would go through life saiving surgery.

In the weeks and then months that followed that fateful night he and his family would be tested time and again. In the Hospital minutes ran into hours which ran into days and then into weeks. He had suffered what people still call a concussion but it it is more correctly called a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI. His was a bad one. His brain had received a serious blow and was bleeding internally and swelling. The surgery he had was drastic and involved more then we care to write here. Safe to say it is more traumatic and terrifying then almost anything you can imagine.

What followed was serious weight loss, life threatening infection, days and days of incredible pain, and an unbelievable amount of medical procedures which included all forms of tubes and devices being hooked up to him.

But Matthew refused to give in to this injury. This monster. This killer. This horrible thing that happened would try and try to take him from his loved ones...but he simply refused to let it win. Just like the way he battled for that win that night he now battled for his own win. Matthew faced it head on.

He wasn't alone. You won't find anywhere in the world a more dedicated family then the Newsman's. They are an amazing bunch and each one has a personality and a set of gifts which compliment the others. They are farmers and just like a good farm family doing their daily chores they set about the business of trying to help Matthew get better.

Round the clock Mom and Dad, Marla and Randy would be there. Older Brother Patrick did what he could as did younger brother Bennie. Grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins and many many friends and family members were there too. There for Matthew to give and do what they could.

Prayers and well wishes were there. They poured in at times by the thousands. Maybe he did and maybe he did not realize all that was happening to him. He will tell you that the answer to that question was some of both.

When I got involved and founded the Raise 7 For Matthew campaign he was fighting an infection and at a serious cross road. To meet him in late November was an honor. The strength there in his eyes despite his now frail body was evident. The spark and twinkle told the story of a Champion just waiting for his chance to rise again. He clearly was in a fight. A big fight the magnitude of which few of us will ever have the ability to appreciate. To have it all and then to have this event happen...well many men would have simply given in to it and gone with God to the other side. But Matthew had other plans and so did all of us.

That first meeting in late November was difficult for me. I had driven straight to the Seattle Childrens Hospital after I finished a 4 hour drive to Tacoma from Portland and 4 hours of reporting on the Washington State Football Semi Finals.

I wanted to cry a little when I saw him. The damage this monstrous injury had inflicted on this fine young man was significant. But those feelings soon melted away when he smiled and extended me a weak hand and said;

"Hey what's up Dirk. Thanks for all your doing."

In that moment we became friends. Not for the moment, although I will never forget that moment. Not for the week or until he got better. No this friendship will remain intact until I am gone. That is something I just know and I knew it when his hand pressed into mine. The deal was done and a silent contract was bound between us.

Later on in early December the second time we met he would tell me "I am going to be home by Christmas" and we all had to wonder if that could happen. He was not eating and had lost a lot of weight. He was not sitting up much let alone standing or walking.

We openly discussed him reaching small goals to get to that date. Sitting up was a goal. Trying to fight off the infection and trying to eat were others. There were many goals he would have to meet in order to get there. It was a tremendous visit.

I returned to Portland that weekend filled with a sense or Pride, Hope, and Faith.

Pride in the fact that we had through our little organization brought hundreds or prayers and well wishes. Pride too in the fact that several teams of young men and hundreds of fans had read Matthew's story and raised their hands at these games and Championships I had attended. It was amazing to see complete strangers doing this and paying homage to a young man that had paid such a price . For all of that I was Proud.

Hope came in the form of Matthew himself. It may sound crazy but he was actually giving people Hope. Even though he received Hope from his family and friends and all of us at Raise 7 I am here to tell you he gave more then he received and he did it and does it every day by just his amazing efforts to recover. he does it by the love and friendship he gives He gave me Hope in so many ways that I can not even begin to tell you. He also restored my Faith in People.

Faith comes in many forms in this story. Faith in God and in the power of prayer. Faith in family and friends. Faith that the power of many is far more then the power of one. Faith in his Doctors and the miracle of modern medicine. Faith that his life can be returned to the place that it was or maybe even into a better place!

Matthew as you may know did get home... not at Christmas but on New Years Eve day. Not too bad at all! That was the realization of a major Goal he had set. He did it even though he would at times tell a few of us that "I am not sure if I can make it". We replied "Of Course You Will".

He dreamed also of the day he would go back to see his friends and his family at Highland High School. It is now basketball season and he is #24 on the Hoops team. He has to be very careful where he goes and what he does as he is still needing to be all fixed up in the late Spring and is not stable enough to walk on his own!

But last Friday Night with his brothers and Dad and his best girl with him he returned to the Highland Gym to be there for his team. This was the first public outing for Matthew and as he came into the Gym the kids and fans saw him and began to cheer "We Love Matthew....We Love Matthew.... We Love Matthew".

He turned to them all and Raised his hands with the Number 7 which has become famous world wide now far beyond the Yakima Valley and the State of Washington. He Raised Seven for many of those folks that have been Raising 7 for him for Months now. This night the Scotties would go on to win their first game of the year.

That moment and the moments with the kids and players at the game were caught on film and some of those pictures appear here in this article. There with his family and friends Matthew Newman celebrated his life and shared it with all to see. No words can express the feelings he or they all had or the feelings that any of us that read about it and saw the pictures have. We all know and understand what a huge thing this was and how amazing that it is. The fact that he did it and that he made it reinforces all that is good and right and just in a world that had only 120 days earlier been turned completely upside down.

Matthew is a wonderful kid that did not deserve what happened to him. But he looked all of that and death himself in the face and simple said "No". He has made great strides. He has some hurdles ahead but we know that he will beat those too.

Together we will be there for him all the way. And more importantly he will be there for us too. Thank you Matthew. Thank you!

New Years Update: Where is Matthew Now??

Hello again my friends. Today is January 11th, 2010. In the past several weeks many of us have watched and worked together to help our friend...Matthew Newman...get home. Together we prayed and sent our wishes. We Raised our Hands in the air with what we now refer to as a "Raise 7". 5 + 2 = 7 . Some sent in pictures. Some did it quietly at home. The fact is over 2,200 people; many of you reading this; sent your hands to the air and made a difference.

We saw professional athletes like Colin Cole of the Seahawks and Jonathan Stewart of the Carolina Panthers get involved and send in their love and appreciation and a Raise 7 too. Both met or spoke directly with Matthew. That added to Matt Hasselbeck and John Carlson and the Sea-Gals who had earlier been involved.

There were tribute shirts from local teams and jerseys from others and a great box of Nike Gear form Matt James and our pals at Nike. Columbia Sports Wear gear showed up delivered by myself and LeAnne Boring...a Raise 7 FB Fan. Cards and pictures and more all came to aid in his recovery.

He wanted one thing. So did we. Forget everything else Matthew faces. It was time to get out of the hospital and with a lot of therapy, the families help, and all of us...and Matthew refusing to let go ... he made it. On the last day of 2009 he was helped form his bed and collected up all his things and said goodbye to Seattle Children's Hospital. He took everything with him expect his missing skull bone which is still in a deep freeze in Yakima.

Wearing his helmet to protect his head with Mom and Dad and his brothers by his side he made his move. With a thank-you, a hug, and one final Raise 7 he was gone. Four hours later over the snow and ice he made that ride through the frigid NW Night. Home to the Farm. Home to his bed. Home to Mom's home cooking and the sound of the wind and birds of the families Naches Heights Farm.

It was a day or two after he made it that we spoke. Matthew cried. I did too. This was the culmination for me and all of us of 6 weeks of non-stop effort. His voice weak...but in it an energy like a spot light shing through the fog. One thing was clear. Phase One... the Goal we talked about over and over was done. He had made it home. Something he had said at our first meeting and in subsequent calls he did not know if he could do.

Now there will be more to this story. Much more. Now is the time to rest and eat. At 127 pounds he has to gain some weight. He says he has and will. "The food is awesome...really awesome...and I am eating everything!!"

Have a Big Mac or two Matthew. This is a great part of this story. the journey continues and he has started his therapy in town where they go 3 days a week. He has much of his memory back and is trying to walk. Next goal. Independence and strength building. Seeing friends is happening. That is great for him and them too.

The community of Cowiche may have some cracks in it over this injury but it is by no means broken. There is a sense of strength and rebirth there. This Apple Farming town will see brighter days ahead. Spring looms in winters belly and she is going to be a magical one.

After a time Matthew will endure some surgeries. That will have to happen. In more time parts of his interrupted life will come back. Maybe school, driving, dating, all that kid stuff. He was taken to "the Blind Side" with his family. "I loved it so much," he told me. Me too Matthew. Me Too.

Matthew says "Thank You Guys" all the time. He is humbled by our help but he accepts it. He still does not understand what I mean when I tell him he has given us all more then we could ever give to him. But he has...and any of you that came with us on this ride know that to be true. If your just getting her hop on. We have a long ways to go.

Matthew heard me say "We love you man" and in reply without hesitation said "I Love you Too."

That was the best thing that has happened so far in a story that is just now starting to be told. Stay tuned for our latest video and more posts before long!

14 Weeks After Going in For Surgery that Frightful Night Matthew Newman Went Home

MATTHEW is HOME after 14 Weeks in the Hospital: The Miracle is Happening

UPDATE:

Matthew is H O M E in his own bed. Randy (Dad) said it was a long drive but that Matthew took a long thoughtful walk around the home to get himself reaquainted and that he is exhausted....but oh so happy!!

Now begins his efforts to continue to rehab and to put on some weight cause 127 is a long way from the... 160 plus he was at when he was hurt...but he will make that part back! This event...him going home was his doing. I do want to thank you all...now we are too many to really name. But still from the bottom of my heart...and the Newman Fam.... Thanks!

Today Jonathan Stewart (Carolin Panthers) called Matthew and Coach Rodriguez of Cascade Christian took him signed ball and jersey! RUDY Ruettinger of the book/movie Rudy contacted me and is sending a Picture, and now many of the Oregon Ducks including Masoli and Dennis Dixon among others are joinging Raise 7 from The Rose Bowl!!! Man...what a cool deal.

The really amazing thing is that he made it home. I have to tell you....there were times when that was in doubt. He will need us in the future as he move through more phases of his rebuilding but dang it.... he is HOME!! That is all that matters tonight. Newman's and Matthew....we did it! You did it! We all did it!

Matthew ...we love you pal. Bottom line. Welcome Home!!

He started out strong, a football star.
Every one knew he would go really far.
Game day came around and he was prepared.
When it happened people just stared.
I thought he was out there, doing his thing,
But I got a call, and my heart began to sting.
My cousin, my friend, my brother, my hero
Went down on the field before the clock hit zero.
His dreams of fame turned into a nightmare
He was hurt bad, no time to spare.
Now he lays in a hospital bed.

Matthew I am so proud of you. You stuck it out to the very end, I and you have given me so much hope. I keep saying it, but I just want you to know that I love you, and you are the best cousin anyone could ever want. I will see you this summer.

Star NFL Running Back Jonathan Stewart Drops in on Raise 7 For Matthew

While he is a busy guy as the #2 guy at the Carolina Panthers and the #17 overall running back this year in the NFL that could not stop Jonathan Stewart of the Carolina Panthers from getting involved. Stewart played for Timberline High School in Washington State and had a marvelous career at Oregon before leaping into the NFL. Coach Luis Rodriguez of Cascade Christian played with Jonathan and made him aware of the situation of Matthew Newman of Highland High who is still fighting to recover from the concussion and resulting trauma he received in a game this year. Here is a great picture of Jonathan Stewart raising 7 for Matthew Newman. That is class folks. Forty years later, a happier twist to a tragic story

The Story of Matthew Newman and Another Young Man, both of Highland High School, separated by 40 years is told here beautifully. Come read this amazing story by Reporter Roger Underwood.

It was one of the darkest nights in the history of the Highland community, the evening of Oct. 24, 1969, which began with the festive atmosphere that accompanies a high school football game in a small town.

The lighthearted environment quickly included concern, however, when Joe Casper, the Scotties’ best player, lay motionless on the home-field turf after making the tackle on the opening kickoff against Goldendale.

Concern became fear when Joe, after being attended to for a long period on the field and then being carefully removed on a stretcher, was driven away in an ambulance. He still hadn’t moved.

Fear became sorrow when we learned that Joe had suffered a spinal injury, that he was paralyzed and would likely remain so.

Then sorrow became raw, unspeakable grief.

Shortly before midnight on Nov. 6, 1969 — hours after Highland had won the Valley A League championship with a 21-0 win at Cle Elum — Joe died.

During the two weeks between his injury and death, the youth among us wrestled all manner of emotions.

Why us, for example, and above all, why Joe?.

After his passing, I faced a question that should never confront someone so young: Why should this person, who had lived less of his life than I had, die?

Forty years after that tragedy, on the field that bears Joe Casper’s name, Highland was dealt another soul-sapping blow when Matthew Newman suffered a life-threatening head injury against Naches Valley.

The similarities regarding the incidents are eerie.

Both Casper and Newman were juniors. Both were solid students, both were multi-sport athletes, and both were among the best-liked and most-respected people in their schools.

But thankfully, there is also a welcome difference.

Newman, initially at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center, was moved in October to Children’s Hospital in Seattle where he continues a remarkable recovery.

Not an easy one, mind you, but a recovery nonetheless.

Through past weeks Matthew has fought through dangerous infections accompanied by severe headaches, but of late has made substantial strides.

Literally.

He even walked to a recent medical staff meeting, prompting a post on his Caringbridge Web site to remark, “Showing off to his doctors in hopes of getting an earlier release never hurts.”

Matthew’s family — mother Marla, father Randy and brothers Patrick and Benjamin — are with him today, no doubt brightening his mood and providing him the ultimate outlet for displaying his newly-recovered mobility. At the same time, familiar faces have whetted Matthew’s appetite for home.

“I can tell you this,” Randy said in a recent telephone conversation, “Matthew does not want to be here.”

And as remarkable as Matthew’s recovery has been, the outpouring of support from throughout the entire Northwest has been nothing short of mind-boggling.

Among his visitors at Children’s have been Seahawks Matt Hasselbeck and John Carlson, and former Mariners catcher Dan Wilson. Wall posters and cards have been sent by schools, teams and cheer squads from up and down the Valley.

And thanks to the Internet, Matthew’s story has known no boundaries.

At last check, 682 messages had been left in Matthew’s guestbook. And here’s an example of his inspiration.

During a Class 1A playoff quarterfinal last month, Nooksack Valley’s Anthony Reese discarded his normal jersey No. 85 in tribute to Matthew’s No. 7, and led the Pioneers to a 54-47 win over King’s. Not only did Reese honor Matthew, his teammates followed suit by holding up seven fingers after scoring touchdowns.

That Matthew was badly injured playing a game he loves, and continues a long and arduous recovery, have clearly gotten the public’s attention. But those who know him, who are truly aware of his character, realize that their own responses have stemmed from more than reactive sympathy.

“Matthew,” said Highland football coach Shane Roy, “is a good athlete, a good student and a good citizen. But the reason his classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches are so fond of him is that he’s simply an outstanding human being.”

So is he close to coming home?

“He might be, we’ll see,” said Randy Newman. “He definitely wants to, and is working really hard to get to that point.”

Meaning Matthew has made light years of progress since the night of Sept. 18, when a blossoming young life came perilously close to ending. A portion of Matthew’s skull was removed, for example, during emergency surgery to reduce swelling and pressure around his brain.

“They have to tell you the worst-case scenario,” Randy said, alluding to discussions with doctors on the night of Matthew’s injury. “I was thinking, ‘that can’t be. He’ just a kid, and a few minutes ago he was running around on a football field.’ I was in denial, I guess.”

But now, 40 Christmases after Highland grieved the loss of Joe Casper, the community is rejoicing. It is celebrating Matthew Newman’s spirit, courage and resolve, and joining with his family in marveling at the far-flung recognition of it.

My father, Howard Underwood, drove Joe Casper to school on his bus and coached him in youth sports. When he learned of Joe’s death he did something I hadn’t before seen, he cried.

Were Dad here today — he drove Matthew’s grandfather, Dave Newman, to school — he would no doubt consider Matthew and what he has done over the past three-plus months.

And I’m sure he’d cry again.

"Raising Seven" for injured high school quarterback

YAKIMA, Wash.- Matthew Newman was quarterback for the Highland Scotties until he was knocked unconscious during a football game. His concussion lead to serious brain injuries.

"He was totally healthy, right here at school during a football game, a game he loved and still loves even after what he's been through, and in seconds his life changed," said Michelle Martin, his aunt.

Matthew has been living in the hospital for over three months. This is a picture of Matthew and his cousin Ryan. Growing up, they did everything together and Ryan says it's been tough seeing Matthew go through this.

"It could have been anyone, it was a bad accident, people just need to be aware and know it could happen again," said Ryan Martin.

To help Matthew and his family pay for his recovery, students and friends are selling t-shirts shirts asking people to raise seven for Matthew.

"Matthew's jersey number was seven so if you get inspired, and you're at a basketball game or anywhere just raise seven for Matthew to show you're support and let others know you're thinking of him," said Olivia Newman, Matthew's cousin.

From the Highland Scotties to other teams around the region, students are wearing his number, raising awareness on sports safety.

"We really need to rethink when we're signing those waivers, we need to make sure things like this don't happen again on any fields, basketball or tennis courts," said Martin.

Matthew's family says he's doing much better. He walked on Friday. While Matthew doesn't know when he'll be leaving the hospital, the community's support is keeping Matthew and his family strong.

If Liberty High School football coach Steve Valach had his way, the recent Coach of the Year award he received would have included a few more names.
Valach was honored Dec. 6 as the Seattle Seahawks’ High School Coach of the Year. He was given the award, along with a check for $2,000 for the Liberty football program, at halftime of the Seahawks’ game with the visiting San Francisco 49ers.
While Valach’s name was on the award, the Liberty head coach pointed out that other members of the team deserved to be on it, too.
“This is really a team award. You don’t win it without having excellent players or without having excellent coaches,” Valach said. “As the head coach, you get your name on it, but it really should include all the players and coaches. There are a lot of people who made this award possible.”
This fall, Liberty posted a 12-2 record and finished second in the Class 3A state tournament. It was the first time since 1988 that the Patriots played in the state title game. Liberty lost to KingCo Conference rival Bellevue 23-17 in the championship contest.
Valach didn’t spend the entire Dec. 6 afternoon at Qwest Field. Shortly after the presentation, he and his son Isaiah left to visit an injured player at Seattle’s Children’s.
Matthew Newman, a junior quarterback for Highland High School in the central Washington community of Cowiche, suffered a concussion in a game Sept. 18. Newman was rushed to Yakima’s Regional Medical and Cardiac Center, where he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his skull to help lessen the swelling and pressure around his brain.
After three weeks at the Yakima hospital, Newman was transferred to Seattle Children’s, where he has waged an inspiring battle for his life that has caught the attention of people throughout the Pacific Northwest, the nation and even the world. A Web site — www.Raise7forMatthew.com — has been started for him. Seven is the number he wears for the Highland football team.
Many high school football players have provided encouragement to Newman. Among those is Skyline High School all-state linebacker Anthony DeMatteo.
Newman’s story has even gone international. In Japan, at the Koshien Bowl, members of the Hosei University team will raise “7” to Newman.
Liberty players and coaches became aware of Newman’s battle earlier this season. On Dec. 6, Valach took posters autographed by the team, to Newman. One poster showed the players holding up “7,” and another poster showed Liberty fans raising “7.”
“He was definitely touched by it and just held the pictures in his hands for quite a while,” Valach said. “I am so proud of Liberty. This year was so much bigger than football or awards.”

I wanted to let you all know that this week we truly go international with Raise 7 For Matthew. In Japan at the Koshien Bowl 80,000 people will congregate to watch the Hosei University Tomahawks try and win their third national Collegiate Championship. Coach Brian Derby of Hawaii will be there and the boys are going to Raise 7 to Matthew. In New Zealand the High School and AAU Club American Football teams will meet and play on Saturday. They will be Raising 7 with Coach Geoff Hodgemen. In Hawaii at the Aloha Bowl athletes from all over the country, Hawaii and Samoa will be Raising 7 For Matthew too. That game will have Anthony DeMatteo of Skyline, Colin Porter of Bothell, Dee Maggiit of Lakes all from the Seattle area playing. Sportslink that is running the event will be taking a big role and getting pictures of all these boys Raising 7.

The Hillsboro Ball Boys are Getting into the Act! These guys do a great Job for the Spartans!!

"It isn´t easy but the motivation is certainly there. Matthew continues to work on regaining strength with his physical therapy staff at Childrens. Encourage ment and support continue to abound as he even had a visit from a couple of Seahawks very recently. Watch for photos and details to follow. When I spoke to Matthew on the phone the other day I asked him what were the best experience and his biggest frustrations in the past weeks. He said the support from so many was best and he just wants to go home! Keep fighting and working hard Matthew, you will get there soon"

Matthew also told me viw text message "Tell them all Thank You so Much". I know it is hard to be on the outside looking in at this situation but just know that the pictures and well wishes and thoughts and all that are having a huge impact. Kepe them coming. With some hard work Matthew will make it back home to continue on his ling road to recovery.

We are very happy to learn and to share the News that the head Coach of Liberty, Steve Valach has been named as the Coach of The Year in the State of Washington.

Imagine this guy leaves the Championship game loosing a tough one by 5 to Bellevue; goes to a Birthday party with his 7 year old the next morning, then hits the Seahawks Game and makes time to stop and Visit Matthew at Seattle Children's Hospital. Not a bad deal at all!! No wonder he received such a great honor!! Way to go Coach!! Here is what the Paper had to say:

MATTHEW IS BACK TO THE REHAB FLOOR!!

After approximately four weeks of battling infection in the acute care center, Matthew is back to where he should be, working towards regaining strength and mobility and one step closer to getting back home. As stated in an earlier update, its not an easy transition and its going to take all the determination and fight that Matthew has. Support and encouragement from all across the country as well as the desire to come home can add up to some pretty good motivation.

The Liberty High Team and Coaches all Raising & on their Way to a Shocker Win Over Lakes at the Dome

Thanks to all of you guest-book contributors and especially to Dirk Knudsen for your wonderful posts and extra inter-net efforts that have lifted Matthew up in so many ways. Watching the Raise 7 for Matthew effort take off has been an amazing and sometimes very emotional sight. To see so many kids in particular rallying, supporting and honoring an unknown brother of the game above themselves has been and continues to be spectacular. For those of you who have not done so already, check out the you-tube video and raise 7 for Matthew website. This is a good time for us to give Matthew all of the support that we can as it is especially now that the hard work begins that will get him out that bed and back to Yakima. He has made good progress on fighting through the infections and his big challenge is to work through the headaches that remain. Now is when Matthew must become the great competitor he is known to be and battle the severe discomforts that result from upright activity.

Meanwhile, back in Cowiche the Highland Scotties basketball team has come together in a show of support for Matthew and his family by spending one whole Saturday working in and around Matthew's house putting up hand rails, raking leaves and much else. What a great group of kids and we really appreciate their efforts.

Matthew, you have brought the good out of all of us in so many ways. I asked early on in this journal "what is in store for Matthew in the days, months and years to come?" I believe we are beginning to see your positive impact before our eyes. As we all try our best to support and strengthen you, you have strengthened all of us even more. Praise God!

Update From Dirk: 72 Hours of Raise Matthew and a Meeting

Let me say thanks to you all.

In the past 2 days I have been at 5 games and met dozens of you guys. I met Matthew too. He is more amazing then you can even imagine. His injury is so much more severe then I thought and you will not know how much he is trying to overcome except you can try and imagine it. Matthew has endured things I could simply not have.

His attitude in incredible! He is an amazing person and just turned 17 while in the hospital. I am not sure why this had to happen to a kid like this. I know one thing. Without modern medicine he would not be with us. Thanks to God he still is.

He said to tell everyone "Thank You". He is not sure why we are all trying to help. I told him to let us worry about that and that he and his battle to get better is helping us much more then him. I will discuss more about the amazing spirit and the person I met...Matthew...in a few days. Enough for you all to know he is incredible!

Thanks to the Hillsboro Spartans, the Nooksack Valley Pioneers, the Liberty Patriots, to the Bothell Cougars...the Blue Train... to Anthony DeMatteo of Skyline... and to all the fans and supporters and coaches of these schools that have taken on the Raise 7 For Matthew campaign. Thanks to all the kids and parents that I met who said thanks and supported this whole thing.

Going Into Weekend Raise 7 Shows up Around Nation

Today is the 27th of November. We want to update the fans of Matthew Newman.

Matthew is going through a rough patch at Seattle Children's Hosipital. He is going into his 10th week trying to recover from his concussion. When there is more definite news we will let you all know.

Today however we are here to let all the fans and supporters of Matthew know that our effort to get him and his battle recognized is for real. Today at 1 PM during the National Anthem the Liberty High Patriots will be Raising 7 For Matthew at the Tacoma Dome as they take on #1 Lakes in 3A Football action. This is the first game in the Washington State Championship finals where we have made a great connection. Thanks to Coach Steve Valach and teh boys and Coaches for showing their love and respect.

The #1 Hillsboro Spartans Join the Cause: GO MATTHEW and GO SPARTANS

Tonight I will be in Eugene, Oregon for the Thurston High Versus Hillsboro Spartans Game. This is 5A Action in Oregon. Matthew and Raise 7 have now been adopted by the Sparts and there aint no stopping them. #1 Player in the Nation Colt Lyerla will be leading the Charge. See his Video here.

These guys helped light the fire last week and even though they are under dogs we want them to make it all the Way! As the holiday approaches we are all thinking about you more and more. Some new developments today. Now here is something that will connect all of use forever on line at least. Two cool Videos that I made using the pictures we are all collecting up. The shorter one is featuring an 18 year old kid named Ryan Carpenter who actually used to play on my youth team. He has been spending all his time the last few years teaching himself to play guitar and sing and I think he is getting quite good. The song on this is called Cortez Gold. Now we have raised about $1,100 dollars for you and I was hoping to see you this Sunday for a few minutes if you can visit with me. I am really wanting to sit with you for a few minutes and bring with me all the energy that we are gaining and that people have given to Raise 7 For Matthew.

This weekend at the Tacoma Dome and on many other fields people are going to Raise 7 For Matthew. They are going to be there for you paying tribute to the sacrifice you made and all you are suffering through. We will have people at the Apple Cup, at Boise State, at several fields at the College level. All of them thinking of you and your family and how much we all have to appreciate what we all have.

Matthew we want you to get better. So you hang tough. I only know a little but having been in a Hospital for a long time before I know what you guys are going through. Getting you better and home is the #1 priority. Hang on Pal. Be Strong. Easy words for me to say...much harder for you to do but I know you can. You know how to do that.

Reese and Pioneers 'Raise 7 For Matthew' against King's

There's so much to discuss after a game like what was staged Friday night at Woolsey Stadium. But in Nooksack Valley's 54-47 Class 1A quarterfinal win over King's, another story broke out that superseded even the Pioneers escaping from under a 27-point hole.

First off, however, I need to back up just a bit to clarify that the difference-maker down the stretch for Nooksack Valley was Anthony Reese (and not Quinton deGrasse). Saturday's story (link here: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/highschoolsports/2010321889_fessenden21.html) has since been corrected, so that's good. This mistake stemmed from taking the roster at face value: deGrasse was listed as No. 7; Reese wears No. 85.

But for this game, it turned out, Reese opted to go with lucky No. 7 for a touching reason. Here's where the real -- and most important -- story begins.

The Pioneers entered Friday involved in a cause greater than themselves, greater than a chance at reaching the semifinals for the first time since 1975. They were playing for Matthew Newman, the junior quarterback for Highland (Cowiche), who suffered a concussion in a game Sept. 18 and immediately underwent surgery to remove a portion of his skull to help lessen the swelling and pressure around his brain.

Newman is currently at Seattle Children's Hospital, after spending three weeks at Yakima Regional Medical & Cardiac Center. Here are two links if you'd like to get involved in a variety of ways:

Back to Reese and his tribute to No. 7 for the Highland Scotties. Not only did the Pioneers' all-purpose star honor Newman, he was also seen along with other teammates holding up seven fingers after touchdowns.

There were plenty to go around, as Nooksack Valley's high-octane offense scored 41 points in the second half to shock the host Knights. These gestures go a long way in continuing the onslaught of support being shown to Newman as he enters his seventh week at Children's.
